Spray Tan

Before the 1920s, the idea of having tanned skin was rare. Then, Coco Chanel, the iconic designer, taught the world to regard tanned skin as a fashion plus. Perspectives changed quickly. It wasn’t until the 1980s, however, that spray tanning became popular and allowed people to stop lying down in the sun to get a tan. Spray tans revolutionized the idea of tanning and saved skin from absorbing the harm from the sun’s rays.

Spray tanning can be a wonderful technique to give you a nice skin tone and more confidence. One big question some people may have, however, is spray tanning safe?

Spray tanning is spraying a solution on your skin to induce a color that looks like the tan you get from the sun. The skin consists of a pigment called melanin which is responsible for the color of your skin, but spray tans have nothing to do with melanin or its production. Instead, a spray tan only darkens the upper layer of your skin.

A spray tan is a simple technique. It works on the same principle of coloring the skin. Most spray tan solutions contain dihydroxyacetone (DHA). After application, the DHA reacts with dead skin cells on the surface of your skin to change the color of the upper dead layer. This coloring results in a tan that can last almost two weeks.
